March is National Athletic Training Month

Please thank Ms. Engler for all the time and energy she invests in supporting our AMA students and the athletic training program at Carson.

Niki Engler, MAT, ATC

Niki Engler joined Team HEAL in 2015 and serves as the Certified Athletic Trainer for Carson High School—Go Colts!

She was born and raised in Los Angeles, but decided to attend college at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. There, she received her bachelors of education in physical education and a minor in psychology. While at Gonzaga, she served as an athletic training intern and primarily assisted the men’s and women’s basketball teams. She also interned with the LA Galaxy in the summer of 2012.

After college, Niki went to the University of Arkansas and earned her master’s degree in Athletic Training. During the summer of 2014, she had the opportunity to work in Uganda with the Federation of Ugandan Football Association, Growing the Game for Girls, and International Sport Connection. She provided medical coverage for soccer tournaments and taught coaches first aid and wound care procedures. She was able to return to Uganda in the summer of 2016 to continue her global medicine pursuits, by teaching a three-day first aid course to coaches and by assisting at soccer clinics in various villages and slums.

Niki also teaches several sports medicine courses at the Academy of Medical Arts at the Carson Complex. She is currently working on clearing her Career Technical Education teaching credential through a program at the University of San Diego, and anticipates finishing in 2018.

Lastly, Niki is a BLS instructor through the American Heart Association. She also obtained her M1-Basic Training certification in the Graston Technique® in 2015 and took the Functional Movement Screening Level I course in 2016.

LAUSD has a history of successfully using youth engagement to positively impact community health through outreach and education efforts. The L.A. Trust is a non-profit organization working to improve the health of children of LAUSD. Their mission is to increase student health and readiness to learn through access, advocacy and programs.

The goal of the CHIPRA Teen Leader Project is through mentors and teen leaders, fourteen thousand four hundred (14,400) relatives, adult family members or neighbors will receive educational information about:

  1. The importance of health insurance to stay healthy
  2. The basics of Medi-Cal and how to facilitate access enrollment and assistance through Children's Health Access and Medi-Cal Program (CHAMP). CHAMP supports student academic achievement and promotes wellness by enrolling children and youth into health insurance programs.
  3. So I trained 25 sophomores from Mr. Raymundo's Health Occupations Class on March 14th so they can educate their families,  relatives and friends about health insurance especially Medi-Cal for low income families.
  4. We concluded the program today and here are the students who participated in the Teen Leader Project. I will take the data that they collected back to the CHIPRA Office tomorrow and they will take it from there.

Graduate for Mas is a program that promotes graduation and AMA was awarded money for high student participation last year.  This year we are involved in the Fall Attendance Challenge.  These sister programs often send students emails to enter various giveaways and challenges. Last year 2 students had their picture and inspirational quote posted on a sky rise building in Time Square, New York. Over the summer our student Jacob Ramos entered a challenge/giveaway and won! He tells his story below. This year AMA is participating in the Attendance Challenge run by our Leadership Team, so get involved, complete the attendance badge, win $$$$ for AMA, participate in other challenges on the website, and win prizes!!!  https://getschooled.com

- Ms. Cheatham

In summary, getschooled had this type of giveaway on their website and I entered & won 2 MTV VMA 2017 tickets plus a $100 gift card!

The question was "What did you do in the summer and how did it prepare you for your future?" or something like that, and my answer was, "I took a summer internship at a local nursing home to gain experience for my future nursing career."

The video that is attached was the platform where Logic and Alessia Cara basically sang for awareness on Suicide prevention. (That stage was so inspirational and breathtaking and I thought you'd want to see it)
