Mission Statement

Academy of Medical Arts fosters academic scholars and empathetic future health professionals who advocate for healthy families, healthy communities, and quality health care for all.

Academy of Medical Arts 2015-16

Academy of Medical Arts is in our fourth year as a Pilot High School on the Carson Complex.

We exist to prepare students for college, career, and life by connecting classroom knowledge, real world experience, and hands-on health science and medical practice. Due to our California Partnership Academy Grant and our California Health Science Capacity Building Grant, we are able to educate 100% of our students focusing on the academic and career technical education standard and offering hands-on, work-based learning experiences beyond the classroom walls.  As part of our academy, students explore interconnected health and medical practices, learn to make ethical decisions to benefit humankind, and embrace technological and entrepreneurial ideas in the pursuit of wellness, artistic expression, and medical advancement. In addition we preparing students for civic participation through the Habits of Heart and Mind and our flourishing HOSA Future Health Professionals service projects.

Habits of the Heart and Mind

The Habit of the Heart and Mind for April is Connection

March was Convention

Perspective has something to do with looking. Students at AMA are asked to develop a worldview and examine events from history and current events, literature and nonfiction, and scientific and mathematic ideas from multiple points of view. In fact, at perspective has a Latin root meaning "look through" or "perceive," and all the meanings of PerspectiveFebruary was Perspective. According to vocabulary.com, perspective AMA nothing is studied in isolation, so the interconnectedness of ideas helps students understand the world and accept ideas other than their own.

January was Evidence

Evidence is the material used to proof or disprove something. It is the grounds for a particular belief.  Evidence is used to show something clearly or to make a specific point true in an argument.

According to Merriam-Webster.com, "evidence" is defined as an outward sign or indication. Synonyms of evidence include confirmation, corroboration, documentation, testimony, validation, or witness.

At AMA, students are taught to provide evidence in their scholarly work, to evaluate the validity and credibility of sources, and to determine the most relevant evidence for their arguments.

The 84 Academy of Medical Arts @Carson (AMA) students who attended HOSA Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference (SLC)  April 7-10, 2016 in Anaheim shined in competition and enjoyed three days of leadership growth and health science know-how. It was the largest HOSA SLC ever with about 3000 competitors.

More than 50% of the AMA students who participated earned finalist status (top 10)  in their events and the school won 8 medals; 14 students placed in the top five. We also were awarded the HOSA CHAPTER REFLECTION Recognition and the National Service Project Recognition for our work with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Here are some highlights:

Kyle Drexl, 12th grade, won the Gold medal in Extemporaneous Writing

Abbie Nucup, Cameron Bundalian, Philline Tumbaga, 12th graders, won Gold in Health Education

Gabriella Bailon, Charese Detorio, and Rachel Mendoza, 11th graders,  won Silver in Public Health

Kamille Magdrilia, Manuel Adoptante, and Savanna Adkins, 11th graders, placed 5th in Public Service Announcement

Philline Tumbaga, 12th grader, won silver in Medical Spelling

We had a 12th grade finalist in Extemporaneous Health Poster, 2 teams of 11th grade finalists in Public Service Announcement, 3 12th grade teams of finalists in Health Education, 2 11th grade finalists in Medical Reading, a team of 10th grade finalists Health Career Display and our FIRST EVER HOSA BOWL TEAM was a finalist! They came in 6th place out of the 32 teams of competitors who were ranked AFTER taking a test . Of course, I'm more than proud because these leadership and teamwork events are embedded in our curriculum here at AMA and it shows as the students move from round to round with almost everyone making it to the semi-final or final rounds.

In addition, Kaitlyn Riego, 11th grader, was elected Cal-HOSA State Officer. She will be serving the state, representing LAUSD and AMA, as the Vice President for Region 4.
